Our own Mike Olsaver, local chair of the RI Foundation Committee, updated members on the status of the RI Foundation and all the good that it does around the world.
It is the charitable arm of Rotary International - a non-profit organization that supports the efforts of Rotary members to achieve world understanding ahd peace through international humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs.
The foundation was founded by Rotarian Arch Klump in 1917 with a seed gift of $26.50! Since 1947 some $4.5B has been granted to support the 6 Avenues of Service: Promoting Peace, Fighting Disease, Providing Clean Water, Saving Mothers & Children, Supporting Education and Supporting Local Economies.
The RI Foundation is funded by members, matching gifts from the Gates Foundation, return on investments, as well as bequests and major gifts.
Clubs around the world ask their members to give $100 annually. The fund provides all clubs opportunities for matching grants to fund various domestic and international projects.
The Polio Plus Campaign was officially launched by RI in 1995 and donations over the years have all but eradicated this world-wide disease with only a few cases reamining. Some 2.5 billion children have been vaccinated to date! Thanks for the update, Mike.
