Families Against Narcotics - Linda Davis
District Governor-Elect, Noel, introduced our special guest, Linda Davis, on our Zoom meeting to speak about an organization she has been part of for some time. Noel started by saying that his theme for the coming year is ROTARY OPENS OPPORTUNITIES. Along with that is the acronym HERO. Hero is the acronym for Human Engaging Rotary Opportunities. One of those opportunities, he said, is the Rainbow Connection. It was motivated by Maia Angelou’s “Rainbows”. Currently there are 15 such connections (i.e. Disease Treatment & Prevention, Drug & Opioid Addiction, etc.). With us today was Linda Davis, Families Against Narcotics,

Linda said that FAN began as a volunteer organization and grew into one with staff that she heads. Linda was a former judge. She said she noticed changes in her community some 14 years ago in terms of increased drug use when Heroine became a drug of choice back then among well-to-do families in particular who also got involved with prescription medication. It was about that same time that Linda found out that her daughter was addicted to Heroin who, six moths before, had undergone knee surgery and was prescribed Vicodin. Linda said she was really shocked that this happened to her daughter.

She and her daughter looked for treatment sources that could help her with her problem. She was shocked to learn that no one was willing to help them in Michigan. Her next door neighbor was a police officer and that’s when she and others addressed the issue head on. Meetings were held along with about 100 other parents who were going through with various members of their family what Linda was going through with her daughter.  Out of that came a place where others with similar concerns could talk about it and get good, solid information. FAN, she said, was born that night in the basement of a church. There are now 27 chapters in the state providing hope to families across Michigan!

UPDATE
Grad Yard Signs – Mark announced that he was able to order 150 signs thanks to the pledges made by club members and several community leaders. There are 9 different signs each exhibiting a school color for each of the schools in Lenawee County. They are in and can be picked up at the Fabricare Center on N. Main Street. The Mayor of Tecumseh took 30 so anyone in that area who needs some. Please contact Jack Baker at Tecumseh City Hall, Mark said. The signs will need to be returned by June 15th so they can be used again if necessary. Thanks to all who made this possible! If you need the signs to be delivered simply send Mark an email at: markcmurray4@gmail.com.

Mark also gave a shout out to Patty Clark for making a couple dozen masks for all of Mark’s staff!!

Virtual Memorial Day Parade (Virtual) – Kathy Williams announced that while we all navigate these uncertain times, WLEN is reaching back into our archives to re-create an all-time favorite!  The WLEN Virtual Parade and this time we celebrate Memorial Day. Because we realize there likely won’t be Memorial Day parades this year, we invite you to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country and have a “float” in the parade.  You will be able to describe your business/float/entry and we’ll help you with that.  We’ll also run promotional announcements giving you business ID’s inviting listeners to join the parade.  Just because we are in safe mode, doesn’t mean we can’t honor those who served with the ultimate sacrifice. PLUS - 10 :30 Announcements to run BTA on the days you schedule…. we encourage you to run them to support the memory of the men and women that we honor on Memorial Day.  Your investment: $199.00 in May.

Patty made a suggestion that we may want to get involved and use the Rotary Woodworking Warriors as our theme. She also said that a number of the vets are working out of their homes and that a recent project has been the building of flag boxes and anyone who knows of a vet who has passed away from COVID-19, to let the workshop know and a flag box will be made and sent to their family for free.

A Frank Citing – Mark said that he and Mary had a recent window visit with Frank Dick which he really enjoyed. He encouraged other members to give Frank a call or do a window visit themselves. Frank is at Stephenson in the room near the main entrance facing Lake Adrian.

This is an excerpt from the Los Angeles Rotary Club’s website. In 1978, the Rotary Club of Duarte violated the constitution of Rotary International by admitting women as members. As a result of this bold action, the club's membership in Rotary International was terminated. From 1983-86, the Duarte Club fought the ruling all the way to the Supreme Court where they prevailed. On May 4, 1987 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Later that year, Sylvia Whitlock became the first female inducted into a Rotary club and the FIRST club president in Rotary history.
