We were honored to have representatives of the Hospice of Lenawee with us today. Joining our speaker, Dr. Justin Voorhees, were the Executive Director of Hospice, Travis Havens, and our own Anne Sherman.
Justin is a native of Missouri and the son-in-law of Kevin Keller! He attended Texas A & M, studied medicine in Grand Rapids, practiced internal medicine for some time and then became interested in “end of life” care. He participated in a Hospice Fellowship program and moved to Michigan as Hospice of Lenawee was looking for a medical director. He started in July and has been very encouraged since he’s been here as to ”how people in this community are pouring into this organization”. Hospice not only helps their patients, they help their families, he said, providing extensive resources.
Justin said that Hospice has its beginnings during the time of the Crusades. Cicely Saunders, Justin said, is widely regarded as a key founder of modern hospice programs as well as one of the first leading advocates for palliative care to help ensure patients with terminal illnesses are treated with compassion and respect. She was formerly a nurse who later became a physician.
Hospice, he said, focuses more on comfort than on a cure. In other words, on pain management. Medicare Part A helps with the costs of people needing Hospice’s services. Certain criteria, however, need to be met. Patients need a terminal diagnosis by two separate physicians, and must be within 6 months of their demise, Justin said. Covered items include all medications, equipment and services related to the terminal illness. “Volunteers are a huge help to us at Hospice”, he said.
In some cases, a Hospice patient’s health actually improves and their medications will be cut back, he said. Many are discharged and the average is about two a month. For these patients a medical plan is developed moving forward. Should their conditions worsen again, they can re-enroll.
As Justin was wrapping up his presentation, Frank Dick mentioned how fortunate our community is to have a Hospice to meet the needs of the terminally ill and that we should all support it.
New Junior Rotarians for October - The Adrian Noon Rotary Club welcomed their Junior Rotarians for the month of October. Both are seniors at Adrian High School. Anna Schafer (on left) is applying to U of M, MSU, Duke and UNC. Her hobbies include cross country, baking and volunteering. Elizabeth Halfmann wants to attend college next fall and study nursing and then become a physician’s assistant. Her hobbies include volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club and Hope Center.
Sam Beauford Workshop Raffle – Tickets are $5@ or 5 for $20. Grand prize is a hand-made acoustic guitar by a 30 year craftsman from Allen Park valued at $5,000! Drawing is December 7th at Sauce Italian Grill. Be sure and get some.
Lenawee Bike Tour Debrief Meeting – Chip once again thanked those who helped make the 2nd annual event and Family Fun Ride last weekend a success. He announced that the committee will be getting together soon to debrief on this year’s event and make plans for next year’s.
Wreath Sales – Chair, Nathan Salazar, announced that we will again be sponsoring this program. Wreath prices have gone up a bit to $22. We need to know by the middle of this month how many each member thinks they can sell and then a final, drop dead final number by then end of the month. A flyer will be sent to every member electronically so they can post on social media.
New SHU Theater – Rod Hokenson announced that there will be a performance this evening of Fiddler on the Roof which will tie in with the official dedication sometime this weekend he said.
Fluency Friends – Mark spoke for Mary and mentioned that there was still time to sign up to help as the start date is approaching fast.
WLEN Coat Collection Drive – The entire month of October – Seniors Cleaners – that is designed to assist seniors with house cleaning chores. People can donate house cleaning products at the Council on Aging offices and a couple of other locations. If you would like to bring them to Rotary, Kathy Williams said she would be happy to take them with her.
Launch Lenawee – REMEMBER: this is a collaborative with our club, the Lenawee Chamber, and Kiwanis. The first class is scheduled for October. Mark encouraged everyone to go to www.launchlenawee.org and consider becoming a business mentor. There is an application form on the site. Educating, mentoring, micro-loan and networking components to the classes. We need your expertise!

October 18 - District Governor, Paul Sincock, pays a visit to our club! Please be sure and attend.
October 24 – Annual End Polio Now Luncheon. It will be held at the Stables in Blissfield this year. Prez Kathye said that she is still looking for door prizes for the event. If you can help out, that would be great. There will be a 50/50 raffle that afternoon as well with proceeds going to the cause. Be sure and wear purple clothing if you will be attending.

2018-19 RI President Barry Rassin wants Rotary members to Be the Inspiration
Rassin, a member of the Rotary Club of East Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, unveiled the 2018-19 presidential theme, Be the Inspiration, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. “I want you to inspire in your clubs, your Rotarians, that desire for something greater. The drive to do more, to be more, to create something that will live beyond each of us.”
