Program January 31st- Deb Johnson YMCA

     A personal friend of Kathye Herrera, Deb Johnson is the Membership and Marketing Director for the YMCA.  She took the position just last November. Deb said that the YMCA makes an impact in the community on many levels.  Here are a few examples:

• It gives kids a place to go that has a positive influence rather than finding trouble elsewhere.
• Kids come home from summer camp energized. 
• Members become part of a support group that helps them achieve their exercise goals.
• The Y brings family units together versus playing video games, watching television or "socializing" on the internet.
• The Y is the #1 child care provider in the County and offers it free for children of the homeless.
• No one is turned away because they can't afford the membership.  Fees are based on ability to pay through a scholarship program.

     The newest program out of the YMCA is called "Jump Start to Play" and is partnered with Adrian Public Schools.  This is free to 5th-8th graders two days per week and includes transportation.  Not only does it keep the kids off the street, but it provides measurable progress of physical improvements.

     Lastly, how can you beat a hot shower for 50 cents when your power is out?
